Fecal Bacteria

Escherichia coli (E. coli) are bacteria that indicate fecal contamination and potential human health risks while swimming or recreating on the water. E. coli present in the Willamette River indicate the presence of fecal matter from birds, rodents, pets, livestock, humans and other warm-blooded animals.

This indicator measures the presence of fecal bacteria in the river.
