River Dolphins

River dolphins are listed as a vulnerable species in Colombia and are an important indicator species of river health where they are present.

How is it measured?

Data from the Omacha Foundation includes estimates of abundance and habitat use patterns in the Meta, Orinoco, Bita, Arauca, Guaviare, and Inírida rivers. Data series in the Meta River was used to determine the thresholds for the indicators. The stratification of dolphin density in each habitat type was determined using Meta River data. The habitat types determined were the main river, tributary, channel, island, and confluence.
