Here the free-flowing nature of the river is tamed by Horseshoe and Bartlett dams to ensure that Arizona has a robust and resilient water supply. But the beauty and abundant wildlife persist through the reservoirs and through the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation as the Verde meets the Salt River just east of Phoenix near Fountain Hills.
