The Northeast region of the lake basin borders the Canadian shoreline in the Essex region. In this region, the lake is primarily open water, and there are few direct riverine inputs; most of the water flows in from other regions of the lake. The Northeast region is somewhat separated from the rest of Lake Erie by Point Pelee on the Canadian shore and by Pelee Island in the lake.
