The Maumee region of the lake includes Maumee Bay, where the Maumee River empties into the western basin. The Maumee River is the largest watershed in the western Lake Erie basin and carries large quantities of sediment and nutrients into the lake along with its water. Because of this large influx of sediments from the river, Maumee Bay tends to be the epicenter of large algal blooms on an annual basis.
