The Lower Western Shore region includes the estuarine portions of the South and Severn Rivers. These two rivers lie on either side of Annapolis, Maryland’s state capital. The Severn River runts about ten miles northeast from Annapolis. Both rivers are relatively shallow, which prevents large ships from coming into Annapolis and promoted the growth of Baltimore Harbor. Because of pollution from surrounding human development, fish populations in this area are low and oyster harvesting is banned. This area remains popular for recreational boating and paddling by Annapolis residents. (Based on the Severn Riverkeeper.)
