The amount of habitat available to aquatic life depends on how far the water reaches up the bank and, during low flows, how much of the riverbed—or channel—is exposed. In the summer, water that reaches the lower banks of the river on both sides, with minimal amount of riverbed showing, is considered optimal. A channel with water present only as isolated pools is considered poor.
